PLANET HISTORY

Named after the Greek god of the southwest wind, Volturnus is a hot, dry world with many types of hostile terrain. The endless deserts, rugged mountains, volcanic wastes, and dangerous salt flats are constantly scoured by a strong southwesterly wind. Despite these harsh conditions, rare patches of forest and even a few lakes have managed to maintain a perilous existence.

The Truane’s Star group opened a star route to the Zebulon system recently, sending a probe to the planet nine months ago. Unfortunately, all communication with the probe ceased shortly after it passed into the system. No clues as to the whereabouts of the probe have been found.

Because of the cost and time involved in preparing an expedition (as well as the ship required to get a team there), nine months have passed since the original probe disappeared. Nonetheless, the player characters have been assigned to locate the remnants of the first probe, if any can be found. In addition, they are also charged with exploring and surface mapping the planet.

Only the future can tell what they will find, but the story of Volturnus is a strange one. Once a verdant home of many animals, it is now a barren and harsh world. The Possible history of its downfall is outlined below for your reference.

The planet shows signs of both current primitive intelligent life and ruins of an even older and ancient race. For these reasons when the Truane’s Star group got the initial probe data they fast tracked this planet in their list for exploration.

Primitive villages of not one, but 3 types of creatures were seen in high resolution planetary pictures. Each has been listed above as a native population and given a name as a reference. First Contact protocol has been authorized by the Central Government if neccassary, however these seem to be in a very primitive stage and incapable of dealing with us on equal terms. Avoid contact if possible.

Ruins were also seen of very suffisticated types to equal our own. These are likely as much as 2000 years old from the condition of what remains. What is also of interest are signs of planetary bombardment from the same era. Likely a foreign power rained down death on this earlier population attempting to eliminate them. It is also possible they had some sort of civil war involving a space faring arm and home or colony force. The reason for this is unknown, though discovery could be important to both the Truane’s Star group and the Central Government.
